Course Objectives:

  • To build a base knowledge of the United States government so that students gain an understanding of how government works, and their role in that system.
  • To provide background and content so that students may better understand and discuss the problems and issues that our society faces both domestically and globally.
  • To develop public speaking and listening skills.
  • To show students the importance of learning and make class fun!

Themes for the course are:

- CURRENT EVENTS                               - CONFLICT                              - ECONOMICS

- ENVIRONMENT                                     - GEOGRAPHY                         - FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Grading:

Government is a required course for graduation.  If you fail to pass either semester, you will need to make it up before graduation.  Your grade in this class will be based on a cumulative point system, and that percentage will correspond with the following scale:

98-100%=A+                              93-97%=A                              90-92%=A-

87-89%=B+                                82-86%=B                              80-81%=B-

77-79%=C+                                72-76%=C                             70-71%=C-

67-69%=D+                                60-66%=D                               0-59%=F

Student grades will be calculated on a points system.  Points will be earned for everything from in class work, homework assignments, projects and class participation.

Classroom Expectations:

Appropriate behavior rule-of-thumb: if it doesn’t contribute to your and other students’ academic success, it doesn’t belong in the classroom!  I reserve the right to contact parents at any time, for any reason.  Remember, you are in High School and I will accept and tolerate nothing less than mature responsible behavior.

RESPECT!!!

  • Respect Others.  Treat all people as you would like to be treated.

  • Respect Teachers.  Treat teachers with respect and you will find that the respect gets returned to you in the same manner, especially in my class.

  • Respect Yourself.  Be on task, contribute to class, come prepared, try your best, and have your work done on time.  If you don’t respect yourself how can you respect others? This includes being on time to class.

The Senior Project:

The senior project is no longer a graduation requirement in the Snohomish School District.  However, it is still important that students learn the process of working on a project.  Therefore, there is still a project in this class, but it will only impact the student’s grade, not the student’s status concerning graduation.  Details of the project will be presented to the class at a later date.
