Course Description:

This one-year course is designed for seniors who have not passed the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam (NHSPE) in science. This course provides an integrated, standards-based approach by connecting concepts in life science, earth and space science, and physical science. Students gain a foundation in the nature of science and develop critical thinking skills through inquiry, experimentation, collaboration, and data collection with analysis. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one science credit required for high school graduation and qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance.

Important Course Dates:

       General Dates:

  • October 24, 2013 - End of Quarter 1.
  • January 15 - 17, 2014 - Final Exams and end of Quarter 2 & Semester 1.
  • March 21, 2014 - End of Quarter 3.
  • May 29 - 30, 2014 - Final Exams for Seniors in periods 5 and 6.
  • June 2, 3, and 4, 2014 - Final Exams for all non-Seniors.

  • November 8, 2013
  • March 3, 2014
  • April 28, 20143

 Grading Policy:

The grade for each quarter will be computed in the following manner:

  • Formative items (used to assess progress in learning – practice materials used inside the module):
    • 5% - Quizzes and other formative progress evaluations.
    • 15% - Mini-labs and classroom assignments.
  • Summative assessments (Items indicate mastery of the material and are done at the end of a module):
    • 60% - Tests and other Summative Assessments.
    • 20% - Lab reports, projects, and research papers.

        Semester grades will be calculated using this formula:

  • First Quarter        40%                       
  • Second Quarter   40%                       
  • Semester Exam    20%

 

Tutoring Options:

If you find that you need help, and would like tutoring, you can make come by the classroom (323) Tuesday through Friday from 13:25 - 14:00.  I am not available on Mondays, due to school-wide staff meetings.  Check the classroom for days when I will not be available due to parent conferences or other meetings.
