Course Syllabus

James Lipton, of Inside the Actor's Studio fame, has a series of questions he asks his guests. One of those questions is "What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?" This question is the inspiration for this lesson.

This lesson is about taking the first step: Students identifying a dream job and determining what they must do to achieve that dream.

This is not so much a full course as a giant lesson. I shall keep it open as long as I can, and I shall participate in the discussions. However, the real learning comes from going through the processes and using the community of learners to help drive ideas. I look forward to seeing the variety of career paths that people choose, and I look forward to each of the students bringing in their ideas to the discussions.

  • This course is based on several modules that are fairly easy to complete. The time commitment will likely be less than an hour depending upon the student's motivation.
  • Under each module, there will be several items with the item form in parentheses (such as "assignment" or "Discussion"). Students should post their assignment responses to the assignment area (for organization) AND to the discussion area (for feedback and discussions with the group).
  • The assignments will have the assignment purpose and goals. Students should complete the assignment and participate in the discussions to engage other students and provide feedback.

Assignments are not graded, and the assignment area is a means for students to organize their ideas without having them get lost in the shuffle of the discussions.

  • Step 1: Click the "Modules" link on the left hand side.
  • Step 2: Follow the modules in order.
  • Step 3: When finished with the four lessons, students should have enough information to be able to take the next step in completing their goals: Implementation.
  • Step 4: Complete the survey at the end of the lesson.

Any questions can be sent via Twitter to @theITNMTeam. The professor will also be participating in discussions daily and answering questions in the discussion area.
