SYLLABUS

Introduction: the goal of this course is to supply students with information that they can use to make healthy life decisions. In order to accomplish this it is important that all students participate each day and strive to do their best.
Course Description:
This course provides information on wellness, healthy lifestyle drug/alcohol/and tobacco use, mental health, body systems, STDs, and HIV/AIDS, and contagious/chronic diseases.
National Health Education Standards:
In order to properly evaluate performance assessments I will be using the following National Health standards to assess student understanding for each unit of study:
· NHES 1:Health Knowledge: Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
· NHES 2:Analyzing Health Information: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors.
NHES 3:Demonstration of Healthy Behavior: Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.
NHES 4:Interpersonal Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
NHES 5: Healthy Decision Making: Students will demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
NHES 6: Goal Setting: Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
NHES 7:Health Enhancing Behavior: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
NHES 8:Advocacy: Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.

Rules regarding Performance Assessments:
-
Students will be expected to participate in the following areas:
- Unit work; openers, closer, textbook work, research activities, and newspaper articles will all be a part of students practice work. In order to take tests or make corrections to projects/essay all practice work for that unit must be turned in.
- Unit tests/projects are considered as performance assessments and include components for each of the 8 of the National Health Education Standards with differentiation for each level of learning. If any of the students’ answers are not at a passing level they will need to retake the test questions they did not pass on by making arrangements with instructor.
- In order for a student to earn the highest marks the assessment must be turned in complete by due date and corrections must be completed within one week.
- Late work will be graded as follows: late within the 7 days of original due date will be graded down one grade level for each proficiency. Work turned in any time after the first week assessments are due will result in a grade of C . It is essential that all students turn in projects and attempt proficiency tests in a timely manner.

- Consequences:
- 1st offense: Discussion of behavior with teacher and call to parent if warranted.
- 2nd offense: Call to parent.
- 3rd offense: Referral.

Parental Consent Form
The state of Oregon requires that all students receive an education in the areas of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
In your students’ class we will cover human growth and anatomy, including secondary sex characteristics for both males and females.
We will also cover reproduction and students will see the nova film “The Miracle of Life”. This film explains the reproductive process from male and female reproductive organs and their function from conception to birth. The movie is done in a very scientific manner and students learn in detail from the inside how their bodies work.
Students will also learn about sexually transmitted diseases and see a set of slides provided by the county health department.
HIV education is also mandated by the state of Oregon and we will explore how the disease is and is not transmitted. The pathesis of the disease and how it affects the world we live in.
If you do not want your student to participate in this education in the classroom they can be provided alternate form of materials that they will need to complete on their own in the library.
