Course Description and Goal:
The Spanish 101 course is designed to introduce you with the basics skills of Spanish language.
We will cover: listening, speaking, structure, reading, and writing in Spanish.
The course will emphasize practice of grammar and communication skills in real-life situations. This course will rely on active participation both lectures and assignments/quizzes to put into action what you have learned.
At the end of this course students should demonstrate at least a basic knowledge on the following skills:
- Expressions involving needs, basic courtesies, feelings, emotions, and opinions on topics related to daily activities and basic aspects of the Spanish-speaking cultures.
- The present and past basic tenses.
- Understand and respond to short commands and questions referring to basic information in Spanish.
- Read and understand instructions, menus, maps, directions, messages, ads, and descriptions.
- Write short paragraphs.
Students will learn and use morphological and grammatical structures including: present indicative and progressive, reflexive verbs, preterit, etc.
Students will learn basics aspects of the culture, traditions and heritage of the Spanish speaking countries in Latin America and Spain.
Grading System:
This is meant to be a graded course. Assessment criteria for the determination of students' grades includes: exercises, quizzes, attending speaking live streaming sessions as well as a midterm and a final examination.
Class Content:
This is a 12-week course on which classes are held three times a week. Students require at least 2 to 5 hours per week to review class lessons, complete assignments and quizzes and participate in live streaming sessions and/or other class discussions.
- Week 1: Articles, Nouns, Subject pronouns
- Week 2: Adjectives: Gender and number, Verbs Ser and Estar
- Week 3: Present tense of regular verbs, Interrogative and exclamatory words
- Week 4: Present tense of irregular verbs, Verbs with spelling changes in present tense, Dar, Haber, Hacer, Tener in expressions with special meaning, Possessive and demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
- Week 5: Present tense of stem-changing verbs ending in -ar, -er.
- Week 6: Present tense of stem-changing verbs ending in -ir, -uir, Pronouns as objects of prepositions, Direct object pronouns
- MID-TERM QUIZ & WINTER BREAK
- Week 7: The preterite tense of regular verbs, Verbs with spelling changes in the preterite, Possessive adjectives and pronouns
- Week 8: Stem-changing verbs in the preterite, The preterite of irregular verbs, Verbs with a special meaning in the preterite, Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
- Week 9: The imperfect tense, Summary and contrast of the preterite and imperfect, Comparatives and superlatives
- Week 10: Reflexive verbs and constructions, Indirect object pronouns
- Week 11: The present progressive tense, Double object pronouns
- Week 12: Final review
- FINAL QUIZ & WRAP-UP

Please note that this class started NOVEMBER 12th 2012 and will run for 12 weeks. I will be uploading the class content here three times a week: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays OR Fridays during the afternoon, sometimes until the evening (U.S. time, please check your local time zones).
Please check the FILES section on your left side menu to download the course notes, presentations, PDFs and other important downloadable content. On the MODULES section you will find the same downloadable content than on the files section organized by week (1 to 12) but with additional links to external course material (mainly audio and video) included. On the ASSIGNMENTS section in the same menu, the weekly homework assignments will be uploaded and you need to submit them back to me solved online. You'll find instruction on how to do this on each of the homework assignments. Weekly quizzes, mid-term and final exams will be find in the QUIZZES of the left menu. Quizzes will be automatically graded by the system.
Live streaming lessons are meant for you to practice your SPEAKING skills and to discuss how do you feel with the class so far. They will take place either Saturday or Sunday mornings (U.S. time) usually (some rare occasion afternoons) via Skype or Google Hangouts.
When a live streaming lesson is taking place, I will announce ahead of time the exact date and time in which it will take place. I'll probably post a live streaming lesson's calendar here soon too.
Other Classes:
Upon request, I am planning to open other specific Spanish language classes in the future. Examples of this could include: Intermediate Spanish, Advanced Spanish, Spanish for Business, Reading Spanish, Writing Spanish, Speaking Spanish, Spanish Cultural Immersion etc.
