Course Description:
The Edwardsville YMCA has two fitness centers to contribute to the YMCA mission of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. The two facilities offer a variety of fitness equipment including cardiovascular, strength training machines, and free weight equipment. The YMCA Fitness Center — New Member Youth Orientation online course will prepare patrons ages 12-14 to be successful in muscular and endurance development while safely and properly performing exercises and utilizing workout machines.

 

Prerequisites:
Given the nature of the YMCA and the broad demographics it supports, prerequisites for this course are kept to a minimum. There is a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire form that is required by all participants to fill out. This form will be mentioned at the beginning of the online segment of the course and then filled out at the time of meeting with the trainer for the their skills assessment. Based on the answers to this questionnaire, the participants may need to obtain doctors permission to precede with activity.


Course Learning Outcomes:
  • The participants will be able to recall and demonstrate proper etiquette while utilizing the Fitness Center.
  • The participants will be able to perform and demonstrate proper usage of Fitness Center machines and equipment.
  • The participants will be able to distinguish and classify exercises that fall into each category, compound and single joint movements.
  • The participants will understand and be able to operate the different cardiovascular pieces of equipment, i.e., treadmills, stationary bike, elliptical, and steppers.
  • The participants will be able to demonstrate proper breathing technique when either performing cardio or strength training workouts.

Course Activities:
This strictly asynchronous course will provide participants an opportunity to learn proper etiquette and machine usage in regards to the YMCA Fitness Center. Throughout the course, in addition to video lecture, participants will be assessed in the following activities:
  •     Discussion questions (2 short answer/discussion questions per module, totalling 8 for the course)
  •     Practice questions throughout each module
  •     Review questions after each module (5 review questions per module)
  •     Course completion quiz (15 question quiz - due at the end of the course)

Attendance/Participation:
Because this part of the course is being taught entirely in a self-paced asynchronous online environment, full participation and fulfillment of the course is mandatory before a trainer-led on-site skills assessment can be performed and clearance given for full access to the Fitness Center. You will have thirty (30) calendar days to successfully complete the four (4) module course. After thirty (30) days, you must re-register with the YMCA Service Desk to regain access to the course.
