Assessment Guidelines

Students must pass each assessment task as outlined to obtain a pass in a Unit of Study and be deemed competent.

If all assessment tasks are not passed, a final grade of U [ungraded fail] will be given and student is deemed not competent.

Students can re-sit each assessment task once only, provided they have already properly attempted the assessment task by the due date.  The grade for an assessment re-sit will be a maximum of 50% only for that task.

This subject will be finally graded according to the weighting shown below.

1.

Assignment – in class (Mid Semester Task)                                                                                                                  20%

Teacher/students should play all simulations except :      Working with Photoshop Smart Objects

Using the Related Files toolbar and Code Navigator

                                                                             Using HTML data sets

Using Yahoo! web widgets and code hinting for Ajax and JavaScript frameworks

                                                                             Publishing your site

Student Task: follow the steps outlined in the following tutorial.

Dreamweaver Developer Centre’s David Powers (the folder required for these tutorials is check_cs5)

Building your first website – Part 1: Set up your site and project files

Creating your first website –       Part 2: Creating the page layout

Part 3: Adding content to pages

Part 4: Adding the main image text

Part 5: Adding the Spry menu

A copy of the instructions from these 5 tutorials is available in a file called FirstWebsitePart1-5DavidPowers.doc.  Do not print this out as there are 72 pages.  It is better to work through the instructions 1 at a time and modify your website as you go.

Week Two (revision of Dreamweaver features which should have been covered in Web Design)

Student Task: Continue with Week One work.

Forms

(References Web Design text book or Chapter 22 Building Forms in the file “dreamweaver_cs5_help.pdf”)

Student Task:

View forms introduction videos   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW_cuGbBYM4 followed by  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQxKFvlzr20&NR=1 and finally http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5zPxS5Dl2E&NR=1

Complete the tasks in the tutorial “Forms_AdobeTutorial.pdf” which creates a website using the files found in the folder “studentFinal_Form”.  A solution can be found at http://aureledeco.free.fr/form_final.htm or by creating a website using the folder “FinishedFinal_Form”

Templates

(References Web Design text book or Chapter 14 Creating and managing templates in the file “dreamweaver_cs5_help.pdf”

Student Task:

View the templates introduction video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfCGuKBmW3c&feature=related

Optionally also view a video on Template Based Pages  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2fvx0j1n_k&feature=related

Create a simple template and use it to format an html page.  Make sure to insert an “Editable Region” in the template.

Week Three - Five

Teachers introduce the concept of a client/server environment in the context of an internet environment.

Because the class environment for dynamic websites is often slightly different to online tutorials you need to note the following:

  • Ignore page that ask you to change the access to the testing server to FTP.  You must leave access as Local/Network
  • use a localhost as opposed to a remote server (see “Xampp Notes” below)
  • use php and MySQl client side technology

  • When creating a database connection to MySQL:
    • localhost is the MySQL server
    • root is the username
    • There is no password.

Xampp Notes

A practical task is to set up the Apache server and the database server MySQL.

Get a copy of the xampp.zip file from your teacher, or copy the folder xammp (450MB) from the c:\drive to the root directory (eg e:\xampp) of your memory stick/external HDD

Open the folder and run the executable file xampp-control.exe.  Click on Apache Start and MySQL Start.

(References Web Design text book or Chapter 20 Making Pages Dynamic in the file “dreamweaver_cs5_help.pdf” available from the teacher)

Create a subdirectory cafe_php under the “:\xampp\htdocs” directory, and extract all files from the café_php.zip file into this new subdirectory or copy the folder directly from the teachers s: drive.

Use the file cafeTownsendPart1.pdf for the next tutorial.

This is a tutorial called Developing a Web Application with Dreamweaver, by Charles Nadeau, which uses the cafetownsend database. This database already exists on your database server.

Students will need to follow the instructions at the following web site              Only create the tables as no images are available for use:

http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/building/master_detail_php

OR use the file “CreatingYourFirstmasterpage.docx” This is a tutorial called Creating a Master/Detail Pages, by Charles Nadeau, which uses the cafetownsend database.

When the tutorial is completed students are to attempt the extra tasks on the handouts :- recipe1_MasterDetail.docx and recipe2_discoveryExercise.docx.  Answers provided in the folder ianRecipe.  Students should also attempt the tasks on henryBooks_MasterDetail.docx.  Answers in the folder ianBooks.

Completing the php component of these tasks is essential before attempting the mid semester assignment.

Teachers to provide additional exercises if required

Week Six and Seven

Make sure the tasks from previous weeks are completed.

A comprehensive example of creating your first dynamic website is found in the folder dynamicWebsiteCheckMag which contains a step by step illustrated tutorial in the files CreatingYourFirstDynamicWebsite1a.docx and CreatingYourFirstDynamicWebsite1b.docx by David Powers.  Copy the required folder to be under under the “:\xampp\htdocs” directory.

Make sure the exercises are completed.

Mid semester assignment is to be handed out to students at the end of week 6 class.

Work on mid semester assignment in class time.

Week Eight

Make sure the online tutorial from the previous week is completed.  Students can then work on CreatingYourFirstDynamicWebsite1c.docx by David Powers.

Work on mid semester assignment in class time.  Teachers are to monitor student work to confirm it is their own.

Mid semester assignment is due in week 9

Week Nine

Students work on the assignment in class time.  Teachers are to monitor student work to confirm it is their own.

Mid semester assignment is due.

Check student’s knowledge of their mid semester by getting them to demonstrate their working assignment, and perhaps test their understanding by getting them to reinstate a parameter, record set, repeat region, or site etc that you have deleted.  It is also part of the assessment criteria marking sheet.

Students that finish early can follow the instructions in the folder NationalExInstructions.  This uses the files in the folder DW_php.

Week Ten

Follow/complete the instructions in the folder NationalExInstructions.  This uses the files in the folder DW_php.

End of semester assignment is to be handed out to students at the start of the first class in week 10.

Week Eleven

Make sure the tutorial from previous week is completed.

Follow the instructions in the Adobe tutorial by Matt Brown “Record Store Tutorial.docx”.

When students have completed the Record Store Tutorial.docx exercise, they can move on to some php discovery task.  Investigate some basic php code on the internet.  There are many websites that will give simple php programming examples.  Examples should include: creating variables, if else statements, and do while looping.  The important code to create a flexible search is provided in the document  RecordStorePart2-if-statement.docx along with some explanation.   This code can be cut from this document and pasted in the correct place of the student’s php page.  Their page will work after the comments are removed.(see week 12 for solution)

If time permits work on assignment

Week Twelve

A highly modified solution to RecordStorePart2-if-statement.docx is provided in the folder RecordStorePHPSearch

Attempt the instructions found in Week12_UploadFileTask.docx

If time permits work on assignment

Week Thirteen

Students will need to follow the instructions at the following web site              :

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/php_event_registration.html

This is a tutorial called “Creating an event registration application in PHP – Part 1: Building the front end”, by Joseph Lowery, that uses the event_registration database.  This database already exists on your database server.

Next students will need to follow the instructions at the following web site      :

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/php_event_registration_admin.html

This is a tutorial called Creating an event registration application in PHP – Part 2: Building the back end, by Joseph Lowery, that uses the event_registration database.  Emphasises logging in.

If time permits work on assignment
